When you first arrive in Songjiang you will realize an extraordinary town named, “Thames Town” Taiwushi as the locals call it.  It resembles an English village with parks and waterways. The old style buildings will leave you in awe as you ponder, why? Why, in the middle of China, at the heart of Songjiang is there an English town with street names like, Nottingham Hill or Oxford Street? However unexpectedly, just around the corner with bright red letters and a lantern hanging by the door resides “ROSE BAR”.

As you enter, you are instantly welcomed by Emma a cheerful Chinese lady who is the owner. Within a few seconds after entering, a very attentive waitress rushes to your side inquiring you about your beverage, and will continue doing so for the rest of the night whenever you are without drink. The selection of alcohol will appease anyone’s appetite and the bartenders are more than capable of making anything you desire.

The walls are influenced by Emma’s German husband Marco, with football banners and flags, and in the back a large TV sits mounted on the wall displaying, surprise, usually football. It nearly feels like a sports bar, but unlike the more common American style ones, this one offers a mix of elegance and attitude. And with the bar usually attracting a crowd of expats vigorously discussing their new Audi or Mercedes-Benz it resembles a German bar more than anything.

The menu features a range of traditional German food such as “Nürnberger Bratwurst mit süssem senf” (pan-fried sausage with sweet mustard). Peanuts are often served at your table along with a traditional challenge of Dice. Be wary, one of the bar staff requirements in China seems to be endless years of experience at this game.

Downstairs in the basement you will soon discover a well taken care of pool table, surrounded by darts, a foosball table and comfortable seating. It nearly feels like another bar you could retreat to and still enjoy the staff and owner.

The Rose Bar is one of the top choices for local bars in Songjiang that we would recommend anyone visiting when in the theme town of Thames Town.
