I wanted to feature a maid café in the first issue of DOWNTOWN Songjiang magazine but couldn’t find one! When it was time to distribute the mag and I went on my first run on student street, I was more than surprised when I walked up a dirty and seedy staircase hoping to find some more coffee shops to get rid of the last copies under my arm. I opened the door and was suddenly in what I thought was heaven. Real life anime girls drinking milk and kissing eachother!

I finally went back here to take some photos and drink a coffee. The decoration is lacking enthusiasm, although I love the coat hangers with maid dresses at the entrance. There is also a giant teddy bear at the entrance blocking probably one of the most comfortable seats in the place, but you can’t help but grin at the strangeness of it all, and that somehow that teddy bear makes total sense in this place.

I asked the maids to stop playing ‘Magic, the Gathering’ for a minute and pose for the camera. I wanted the pictures to look natural so of course I had one of them prepare a cappuccino, and the other hold a pitcher of fresh milk…

I was pleasantly surprised when the maids started kissing each other for no apparent reason, and I won’t go into detail what happened later..

This place is definitely worth going to if only to have experienced being in a maid café.
